Battle of Saratoga By Megan external image 800px-Surrender_of_General_Burgoyne.jpgIn the Conteninal army, the leader was general Horatio Gates with 17,000 men. In the British army, the leader was general John Burgoyne with 5,778 men. The war didn't go well so far for the Conteninal army, and this was the first battle in the Revolutionary War they won ever since one of the first battles.

The Battle began in 1777. Gate's army surrounded Burgoyne's near the Hudson river. Over 1,200 British died and only 500 Americans. Burgoyne surrendered, on October 17 1777, and the remaining of his men became war prisons.

This was a big defeat for America, because it lead up to many more victories. Many people call this the wars turning point.
